Amazon Account Health in 2026: How to Avoid Suspension

7 min read

Account health is the only Amazon metric that can end the business rather than reduce it. Everything else — ranking, Buy Box share, margin — is a matter of degree. Suspension is binary.

The frustrating part is that most suspensions are not caused by anything dramatic. They are caused by an operational gap that produced defects steadily for weeks while the seller was busy with something else.

The Metrics That Matter

Amazon publishes targets for each. Know the numbers, and check them weekly rather than when something goes wrong.

Order Defect Rate — target below 1 percent. The composite metric: negative feedback, A-to-Z guarantee claims, and credit card chargebacks, over your total orders. This is the one Amazon weights most heavily.

Pre-Fulfillment Cancellation Rate — target below 2.5 percent. Orders you cancelled before shipping. Almost always because you could not fulfill them.

Late Shipment Rate — target below 4 percent. Orders confirmed as shipped after the promised date.

Valid Tracking Rate — target above 95 percent. Shipments with usable tracking.

On-Time Delivery Rate. Increasingly influential and largely a consequence of realistic handling times and reliable carriers.

The percentage framing is what catches small sellers. A seller doing 40 orders a month breaches the 2.5 percent cancellation threshold at the second cancellation. A seller doing 2,000 orders has room for 50. The same operational mistake is fatal at one scale and invisible at another.

The Policy Violations That End Accounts Fastest

Separate from metrics, and generally faster-acting.

Inauthentic or counterfeit claims. Amazon's hardest line. Defending one requires invoices from an authorised distributor — retail receipts do not qualify, which is a structural risk in arbitrage models.

Retail dropshipping. Shipping directly from a consumer retailer to your Amazon customer, so the buyer receives another retailer's packaging and receipt. Explicitly prohibited, frequently reported by the customers themselves. See the 2026 dropshipping rules.

Review manipulation. Incentivised reviews, review swaps, family and friends. Detection is better than sellers assume and enforcement is unforgiving.

Listing hijacking and variation abuse. Attaching offers to listings that do not match your product, or manipulating variation families.

Intellectual property complaints. Even meritless ones create violations that must be actively resolved.

The Quiet Killer: Cancellations From Stockouts

Here is the sequence that ends more accounts than any deliberate violation, and it contains no wrongdoing at all.

You list a product sourced from a supplier. The supplier sells out. Your Amazon listing does not know — it stays live, with a positive quantity, taking orders. A customer buys. You cannot fulfill. You cancel.

That is one pre-fulfillment cancellation defect. Multiply by however many listings share the exhausted supplier and however many hours pass before you notice.

Two features of this make it particularly dangerous:

It compounds silently. Nothing alerts you. Amazon's reports look normal until the account health page changes colour.

It hits small sellers hardest. The threshold is a rate, so lower volume means less tolerance.

Manual checking cannot close this gap. Once a day means you are half a day behind, and a product can sell out in two hours. Checking 200 supplier pages hourly is not a task anybody sustains.

Repricefy exists partly for this specific failure: monitored suppliers are checked continuously, and when one marks a product unavailable, the MFN listing quantity is set to zero before the unfillable order arrives. FBA stock stays Amazon's to manage. See supplier monitoring and Amazon inventory management.

Handling Time Is a Promise You Should Keep

Late shipment rate is the metric sellers damage most casually, usually by setting an aggressive handling time to look competitive.

If your supplier ships in two to three days and you promise one-day handling, you have committed to a defect rate. Not risked one — committed to one.

Set handling time to your supplier's observed fulfillment time, measured across several real orders, with a day of buffer. The small competitive disadvantage of a longer handling time is trivially cheaper than a late shipment rate creeping toward 4 percent.

Weekly Habits That Prevent Suspensions

Check account health weekly. Every metric, plus the policy violations panel. Trends matter more than absolute values — a metric climbing steadily is a problem in progress.

Respond to every buyer message within 24 hours. Response time affects your metrics and, more practically, a fast reply frequently prevents the negative feedback or A-to-Z claim that would have been a defect.

Resolve A-to-Z claims before Amazon does. A claim you settle directly with the buyer does not count against your ODR the way one Amazon decides against you does.

Keep invoices for everything. Supplier invoices with your business name, the product, and quantities. When an inauthentic complaint arrives — and eventually one does — this is the only thing that resolves it.

Never let a listing outlive its supply. The rule that prevents the most common defect there is.

If You Do Get Suspended

Suspension is often recoverable, and the appeal that works has a specific shape. Amazon wants three things, in this order:

Root cause. What specifically went wrong. Not "we had inventory issues" but "our supplier went out of stock on 14 August and we continued accepting orders for six days because stock was checked manually."

Corrective action. What you have already done about the affected orders, refunds, and listings. Past tense, concrete.

Preventive action. What system now makes recurrence impossible. This is the part appeals fail on. "We will be more careful" is not a system. "We now use automated supplier stock monitoring that sets listing quantity to zero within minutes of a supplier stockout" is.

Be specific, unemotional, and short. Do not argue about whether the suspension was fair; that is not the question being decided.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Amazon account health rating?

Amazon expresses account health as a score in Seller Central, and higher is better. What matters operationally is that each underlying metric stays inside its target: order defect rate under 1 percent, pre-fulfillment cancellation rate under 2.5 percent, and late shipment rate under 4 percent.

How many policy violations before Amazon suspends you?

There is no fixed count. A single serious violation such as counterfeit goods or inauthentic item claims can suspend an account immediately, while minor issues accumulate. Treat the first violation as the warning, because there is no guaranteed second one.

Can you recover a suspended Amazon account?

Often yes, through a Plan of Action that identifies the root cause, states the corrective action already taken, and describes the preventive systems now in place. Vague or defensive appeals fail; specific ones citing concrete process changes succeed far more often.

What is the fastest way to damage your account health?

Cancelling orders you cannot fulfill. Each one is a pre-fulfillment cancellation defect, and because the rate is a percentage, a low-volume seller breaches the threshold on very few cancellations.

Does repricing affect account health?

Not directly, but stockouts do. A repricer that keeps a listing competitive while your supplier is out of stock is actively generating orders you cannot fulfill, which is why pricing and stock monitoring belong in the same system.
